Fishing Creek Watershed Conservation District
There are four watershed structures in the Fishing Creek Basin. The construction of the watershed structures were sponsored by the Fishing Creek Watershed Board and the York Soil and Water Conservation District, and are currently operated and maintained by the Fishing Creek Watershed Board. The structures provide flood protection for county residents and businesses on Fishing Creek. The structures release the floodwaters in a slow, controlled manner. The structures also serve as a sediment basin, provide recreation, and provide wildlife habitat.
The dams are inspected yearly. The need to maintain the structures becomes an increasing area of concern as the lands surrounding the watershed becomes more urbanized. Dam maintenance is essential to reduce risks to public health, safety, and the environment. If the dams are not maintained, York County could lose a valuable source of flood protection, wildlife habitat, sediment control and recreational sources.
Watershed directors are elected to a board that consists of five members. The board is a subdivision of state government, and is responsible for annual inspections, operation, and maintenance for the structures. The current board members are Mitchell Adkins, John Templeton, Tim Whitson, Denny Davis, and Michael Huggins.
